SEVILLE: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized the need for development assistance to be predictable and aligned with the needs of developing countries.
While addressing a thematic roundtable titled “Revitalizing International Development Cooperation” during the fourth UN Conference on Financing for Development held in Spain, Prime Minister Oli stated that global development aid must follow the path of shared prosperity and be transformed from its current imbalanced and insufficient flow.
He stressed that developed nations must honor their commitments through action rather than mere words, adding, “Let us invest in people, not in arms. Let’s measure and enhance balanced investment in climate finance. The true purpose of international development cooperation should be dignity and respect, not dependency.”
Oli also called for new and additional resources for adaptation and mitigation in countries most affected by climate change.
Urging for increased investments based on local ownership, mutual trust, transparency, and partnership, Prime Minister Oli said the Seville Commitment offers a crucial opportunity to transform and reinvigorate global development cooperation.
“This is a historic milestone, but its success depends on our collective will,” he stated, warning that the fragmentation among donors, lack of coordination, shifting priorities, and bypassing national systems have weakened the effectiveness of aid. “We all must agree that such shortcomings need to be corrected.”
