KATHMANDU: On Tuesday, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba held bilateral discussions with Germany’s Foreign Minister Dr. Johann David Wadephul in Berlin.
The talks focused on Nepal-Germany relations, bilateral interests, and various shared concerns.
During the meeting, Minister Dr. Rana acknowledged Germany as one of Nepal’s largest and oldest development and trade partners. He expressed gratitude for Germany’s continued support in economic, social, and other sectors.
Dr. Rana emphasized the need for joint efforts to promote bilateral trade and strengthen networks between the private sectors of both countries. He also invited German investment in Nepal, particularly in industries such as chemical fertilizer production.
The Minister informed that Nepal is formulating strategies to smoothly and sustainably transition after graduating from the least developed country status in 2029, and expects continued support from Germany, the European Union, and other partners in resources, technology, and finance.
Further, Dr. Rana highlighted Nepal’s candidacy for membership in various UN councils — the Human Rights Council (2024–2026), Economic and Social Council (2026–2028), and a non-permanent seat on the Security Council (2030–2031) — and sought Germany’s support for these bids. Germany’s Foreign Minister Wadephul assured commitment to assist Nepal.
Germany is Nepal’s second-largest tourist source from Europe, and despite significant tourism potential, lack of direct flights between the two countries limits full benefits. Minister Dr. Rana requested the initiation of direct flights to bolster tourism ties.
He also pointed out that Nepal Airlines remains on the European Union’s aviation safety blacklist, resulting in flight restrictions that adversely affect tourism promotion between Nepal and Europe.
Dr. Rana informed that the Nepal government has submitted two bills to parliament to restructure the Civil Aviation Authority. These proposed laws align with world’s best practices and comply with EU and ICAO recommendations.
He urged Germany, a key EU member state, to play a role in lifting restrictions on Nepal Airlines. Minister Wadephul pledged his full support on this matter.
Additionally, Dr. Rana raised concerns over the severe impacts of climate change in Nepal and the country’s campaign for climate justice. He expressed hope for Germany’s cooperation in this crucial cause.
