TANAHUN: CCTV footage has captured the moment a passenger bus traveling from Gorkha to Narayangadh lost control and plunged off a cliff in Tanahun’s Aina Pahara area on Sunday afternoon, injuring five people, two critically.
The bus, bearing registration number Ga 2 Kha 1077, had halted for a break at AanbuKhaireni Rural Municipality-2. As it was reversing out of the parking area, the brakes reportedly failed, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and tumble approximately 50 meters down a slope near the Marsyangdi river.
The shocking video shows the driver reversing when the bus suddenly picks up speed and swerves backward uncontrollably.
Within seconds, passengers realize the danger and begin leaping out of the moving vehicle. Eight people, mostly women, are seen jumping out in panic to escape the out-of-control bus.
At least 13 passengers were believed to be on board. Rescuers found five injured at the crash site, with two in critical condition.
The front portion of the bus was severely crushed and lodged mid-slope after the fall. Authorities used a crane to retrieve the vehicle from the accident site.
Police have taken the driver into custody. During initial questioning, the driver confirmed that a sudden brake failure led to the crash.
