Former PM Oli Leaves Army Security, Returns to Bhaktapur
Former Prime Minister and CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has left the security provided by the Nepal Army. Oli returned to Bhaktapur on Thursday. “There is information that the former Prime Minister has taken refuge in Gundu,” said Madhav Budhathoki, Superintendent of Police at Bhaktapur District Police Office. During the second day of the Gen Z protests on September 9, Oli was airlifted from his Baluwatar residence by the army. He resigned from the position of Prime Minister on the same day.

Home and Law Minister Om Prakash Aryal has pledged to implement the Supreme Court’s order allowing Nepalis living abroad to cast their votes. Speaking at a discussion held at the Election Commission on Thursday, Minister Aryal said increasing demands from migrant Nepalis to participate in elections must be addressed, at least under the proportional representation system. “The Supreme Court had issued this order long ago. Nepalis abroad must be able to vote under the proportional representation system. We have to make this possible,” Aryal said.

Supreme Court Resumes Hearings Under Tarpaulin
Following the Supreme Court’s full bench decision to continue hearings under any circumstances, court proceedings resumed today under the tarpaulin, after the Gen-Z protests on September 9 caused fire damage to the main court building. Today, hearings were conducted in Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla’s bench for one case and in Justice Kumar Regmi’s bench for two bail plea petitions. Supreme Court officials said that the fire destroyed much of the court’s physical infrastructure, leaving no space for normal hearings. A preliminary survey indicates that 23 court buildings across Supreme, special, and district courts suffered damages, some complete and others partial.

Two people were killed and 22 others injured when a passenger bus rammed into a stationary truck at Pulchowk in Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality-3 on Thursday. The bus (Pra 1–02–002 Kha 0949), traveling eastward along the East-West Highway, crashed into a truck (Na 6 Kha 3733) that had broken down and was parked on the roadside. Share Market Suspended After Three Negative Circuit Breaks
Trading was suspended on Thursday after the stock market, reopening following the destructive events of September 8 and 9, triggered three negative circuit breaks. The market fell 6 percent during the day. Within two minutes of opening, the NEPSE index dropped 4 percent. NRB Withdraws RS 90 Billion Liquidity from Financial System
Nepal Rastra Bank has withdrawn RS 90 billion liquidity from the financial system on Thursday. With over RS 200 billion liquidity in the system, the central bank drew excess liquidity through a deposit collection instrument. According to the bank, the financial system had RS 204 billion liquidity by Wednesday. Therefore, through a 10-day deposit collection tool, RS 9 billion of excess liquidity was withdrawn.
Insurance Claims Total RS 20.70 Billion from Gen Z Damage
Insurance claims worth RS 20.70 billion were filed due to looting, vandalism, and arson during the Gen Z movement. As of September 16, 1,984 claims were registered with the Nepal Insurance Authority. The highest claims were with The Oriental Insurance Company, totaling RS 5.14 billion for 40 claims, including major losses at Hilton Hotel. Siddharth Premier and Shikhar Insurance received the second and third-highest claims.
Less Than One-Third of Committed FDI Materializes in Nepal
Less than one-third of committed foreign direct investment (FDI) in Nepal materializes. Even with government approval, over two-thirds of the committed amount does not enter. A Nepal Rastra Bank survey shows that only 31.9 percent of committed FDI arrives as actual investment. The Economic Research Department noted that from 1995/96 to 2023/24, only 31.9 percent of committed FDI materialized.
