KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Krishna Sitaula has said that the party should not further weaken itself by calling a special general convention at a time when it is already in a fragile state.

Speaking at a meeting on Thursday morning with Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka and more than a dozen central committee members, Sitaula argued that party leadership can be changed through a regular general convention rather than a special one.

He warned that going for a special convention now would only make the Nepali Congress weaker. Sitaula reportedly expressed concern that the state itself has been weakened, saying national structures such as Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, and the Supreme Court are under attack.

“At a time when the whole country is being weakened, the Nepali Congress has no option but to stay united,” he said. When some leaders in the meeting raised the idea of holding a special general convention, Sitaula reacted sharply: “The country is weak right now.

This is not just an attack on Sher Bahadur Deuba, but on the entire party. We cannot allow the party to be weakened in the name of a special general convention.”

He emphasized the need for internal unity within the party and urged members to engage in activities that boost morale.

“Whenever the Nepali Congress becomes weak, the country faces such crises. Therefore, instead of weakening the party, we must focus on strengthening it,” one of the participants quoted Sitaula as saying.
