KATHMANDU: Differences within the Nepali Congress (NC) over the issue of the general convention have further intensified.

After the two general secretaries announced a special general convention by postponing the regular one, the dispute has come out openly within the party.

Following the Gen-Z revolt, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who had handed over the responsibility of acting president to Purna Bahadur Khadka, called top leaders for an emergency discussion to address the situation that has arisen. According to Deuba’s private secretariat, the discussion was held on Friday morning at his private residence in Maharajgunj.

After Acting President Khadka reached Deuba’s residence, other senior leaders were also called for the discussion. After NC general secretaries Bishwo Prakash Sharma and Gagan Thapa publicly announced on Thursday the decision to halt the regular general convention and hold a special general convention, the party’s establishment faction has been expressing disagreement with that move.

Central Work Execution Committee meeting today

Meanwhile, a meeting of the NC’s Central Work Execution Committee is being held today.

According to NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel, the meeting, scheduled for Friday at 3 pm at the party’s central office in Sanepa, will mainly discuss the party’s 15th general convention and contemporary political issues.

On Thursday, general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma had jointly issued a statement declaring that a special general convention was now the only option, and had postponed the regular general convention.

The two general secretaries stated that if the regular general convention cannot be held, it is the responsibility of the central office to address the demand related to a special general convention in accordance with Clause 17 (2) of the party statute.

Ahead of Central Work Execution Committee meeting, NC President Deuba has begun discussions with top leaders in an effort to find a path to consensus.
