KATHMANDU: Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US–Israeli airstrike, his son Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei has been selected as the new Supreme Leader.

According to Israeli media reports, Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba as Khamenei’s successor.

It has been reported that Khamenei was killed on February 28 during the joint attack while he was at his residence. The attack also claimed the lives of his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. His wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, was injured in the attack and later died during treatment.

Khamenei’s funeral will be held in Mashhad, and a large memorial ceremony will be organized in Tehran. However, the date of the funeral has not yet been announced.

Khamenei had not formally designated a successor. Previously, an interim three-member leadership council—comprising Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei—had been handling the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader.
