KATHMANDU: The investigation report prepared by the commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki on September 08-09, 2025 Gen -Z uprising has concluded that social media influencers played a pivotal role in escalating the protests into widespread unrest. The report specifically names influencers Tanka Dahal, Sujan Dhakal, Shiva Pariyar, Himesh Panta, and Bhagya Neupane, providing a detailed analysis of how their digital actions contributed to the chaos.

According to the commission report findings, the high rate of mobile phone penetration in Nepal allowed misleading information to spread with unprecedented speed, causing an immediate and volatile impact on a massive segment of the population. The report highlights a stark contrast between September 8 and September 9; while areas outside Kathmandu remained relatively peaceful on the 8th, the following day saw the entire country from east to west engulfed in arson and vandalism. This shift resulted in the destruction of public and private property worth billions of rupees, a catastrophe the report attributes largely to social media propaganda that was further exploited by organized criminal groups.

Specific instances of fabricated news were cited as primary triggers for the violence. These included a viral hoax claiming that 35 skeletal remains had been discovered at the Bhat-Bhateni supermarket in Chuchepati, as well as a false report on September 9 alleging that 32 missing protesters had been found dead inside the Parliament Building in Baneshwor. The report explicitly identifies the aforementioned influencers as being involved in the dissemination of such inflammatory content. Furthermore, the investigation notes a separate incident involving a flight attendant who falsely claimed to have witnessed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli fleeing to Dubai on a Himalaya Airlines flight, a rumor so pervasive that the airline was forced to issue a formal press release to debunk it.
