KATHMANDU: A habeas corpus petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) seeking the release of Ramesh Lekhak, former home minister and Nepali Congress leader, claiming he had been unlawfully arrested and detained.

On the same day, Radhika Shakya, the wife of KP Oli, filed a habeas corpus petition seeking the release of the former prime minister. The apex court has said that the hearings on both petitions will be held on Monday.

The arrests followed recommendations from the former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki-led fact-finding commission, which held them responsible for the crackdown during the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9 last year. Acting on the commission’s report, the current government arrested the former prime minister and home minister on Saturday.

Both were presented before the court today. Lekhak was brought to the Kathmandu District Court, while Oli, who is in hospital, appeared virtually.
