All 20 dead in Rolpa jeep accident identified

KATHMANDU: The identities of all 20 people who lost their lives in a jeep accident while travelling from Rukum Purba to Jaljala in Rolpa for a pilgrimage have been confirmed.

One injured passenger has returned home after treatment.

The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Jaljala in Thawang Rural Municipality–1 of Rolpa when a jeep (Lu 1 Ja 4167) plunged about 800 metres off a cliff.

All passengers were from Rukumkot in Rukum Purba, along with some from Dang district.

According to the District Police Office Rolpa, the deceased include Gorkha BK (32), Tilkumari Budhathoki (53), Yuva BC (28), Divya BC (10), Srijana Budhathoki (24), Sudip Budhathoki (13), and Omkumari Budhathoki (40) from Sisne Rural Municipality–5, Takura.

Others include driver Bedu Kami (42) from Shantinagar Rural Municipality, Dang, who was living in Sisne–5, along with Mina Kami (60) and Laxmi Shah (60) of Sisne–5, Tek Prasad Basnet of Bhume Rural Municipality–5 in Rukum Purba, and Rukmina Basnet (27) of Sisne–5.

Victims from Dang’s Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City–15, Ratanpur include Dorpati Giri (54), Tila Giri (32), Jenis Giri (7), Jenisa Giri (12), Elina Giri (25), Sangyog Giri (7), an unidentified person named Yam Bahadur Giri, and Dhanmaya Bista of Ghorahi–13.

Authorities said the group was travelling to attend a religious fair in Jaljala when the accident happened.

A passenger seated on the roof of the jeep, Samir Kami (32) of Sisne–5, managed to jump and survive.

He was first treated at Thawang local hospital and later referred to Rukum Purba District Hospital before being discharged.

The government has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the accident.
