JANAKPUR: A new political twist has emerged in Madhesh Province after the Janamat Party formally withdrew its support to the provincial government, the Office of the Provincial Chief announced.
The issue had earlier been mired in confusion due to internal party disputes. Mahesh Yadav, leader of the party’s parliamentary wing, had submitted a letter maintaining support for the government, while Chief Whip Chandan Kumar Singh had registered a separate letter withdrawing support.
The party has since resolved its internal power struggle by removing Mahesh Yadav as parliamentary party leader. With signatures from nine lawmakers, Chandan Kumar Singh has been appointed the new leader. Following his appointment, Singh resubmitted the letter withdrawing support, which has now been officially acknowledged.
According to constitutional provisions, when a supporting party withdraws its backing, the Chief Minister must prove a majority in the provincial assembly.
With the withdrawal now formalized, the Chief Minister is required to secure a vote of confidence within 30 days. Failure to do so will lead to the collapse of the government, triggering the process of forming a new one.
The future power equation in Madhesh Province is now likely to depend on smaller parties and independent lawmakers.
