KATHMANDU: In a major expansion of the national social safety net and child protection systems, the government has announced a massive fiscal commitment alongside a landmark humanitarian pledge.

Presenting the federal budget for Fiscal Year 2026/27 before a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Friday, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle announced a total allocation of Rs 120 billion exclusively for social security programs.

In tandem with this substantial welfare budget, Dr. Wagle declared an aggressive state initiative to completely eliminate child homelessness from the country’s urban centers, promising to formally declare Nepal a nation free of street children.

The government plans to utilize a portion of the expanded social infrastructure funding to scale up targeted rescue operations, institutional rehabilitation networks, and comprehensive child protection services. educational and residential environments.
