NEW YORK: In a major diplomatic milestone, Nepal has been elected as the Chairperson of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) for the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The appointment marks a significant international recognition of Nepal’s seven-decade-long commitment to multilateralism, global disarmament, international peace, and security.

Following the election, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, expressed his gratitude to fellow member states for placing their trust and support in Nepal’s leadership.

According to a statement issued by Nepal’s Permanent Mission in New York, Ambassador Thapa committed to steering the committee’s responsibilities effectively, guiding its proceedings with strict impartiality, transparency, and inclusivity.

The First Committee plays a pivotal role within the UN framework, driving global discussions and decision-making processes focused on disarmament, mitigating security threats, and maintaining international peace.
