NEW YORK: Nepal has emphasized the critical need to strengthen the United Nations Development System, stating that doing so is essential to ensuring effective multilateralism.

Speaking at a discussion titled “The Future of Multilateralism: Shaping a UN Development System for Post-2030 Era” held at the UN Headquarters, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Lok Bahadur Thapa, stressed that the system must be empowered to adequately address post-2030 challenges and opportunities.

According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Thapa noted that the development system should not only focus on implementing the remaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but must also be strengthened to encompass future opportunities and obstacles.

He underscored that the system’s effectiveness relies not just on its institutional architecture, but on robust partnership and global solidarity.

Ambassador Thapa further asserted that creating an effective and relevant future development system would be impossible without the active participation of civil society, youth, academia, local governments, the private sector, and other key stakeholders.

Concluding his address, the Permanent Representative highlighted that the decisions made today will play a pivotal role in shaping an effective and results-oriented multilateral system for future generations, and he called for a renewed commitment to reinforcing international cooperation.
