SAN FRANCISCO: Google has reportedly limited Meta’s access to its Gemini artificial intelligence models after the social media company sought more computing capacity than Google could provide, a move that is said to have disrupted and delayed some of Meta’s internal AI projects.

The reported restrictions reflect mounting pressure on AI infrastructure as demand for computing resources continues to outpace available capacity. Other Google customers are also said to have experienced similar constraints, although Meta has reportedly been among the most affected because of its exceptionally high demand for AI processing power.

In response, Meta has encouraged employees to use AI tokens, the units used to measure AI usage, more efficiently to maximize available computing resources.

The situation underscores a broader challenge across the technology industry, where companies are investing billions of dollars in chips and data centers while still facing shortages of computing power needed to support expanding AI workloads.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has previously said publicly that computing capacity constraints limited Google Cloud’s growth in the first quarter and contributed to a growing backlog of customer demand.
