KATHMANDU: Opposition lawmakers on Friday demanded an impartial investigation into the self-immolation and subsequent death of Ganesh Nepali, a 25-year-old from Mugu, during the House of Representatives meeting.
Shortly after the session began, lawmakers from opposition parties stood in protest, prompting Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal to allow Nepali Congress lawmaker Basana Thapa to speak. Thapa questioned the government’s response to the incident, saying it had remained silent after Nepali died at Bir Hospital on Friday, a day after attempting self-immolation in Kathmandu.
Other lawmakers also called for accountability. Bhumika Limbu Subba said the incident reflected a deeply troubling situation and questioned why citizens were being driven to such desperate acts. Parbati BK demanded compensation for the bereaved family, while Radhika Ramtel called for an impartial investigation into the case.
Meanwhile, Gyan Bahadur Shahi said the incident highlighted the hardships faced by poor and marginalized people in the capital, arguing that existing policies and public services disproportionately favor the affluent.
