SARLAHI: A loan shark’s family reportedly assaulted a loan shark victim and his family in Sarlahi on Tuesday
According to Laxmi Ghimire, a central committee member of the Loan Shark Victims’ Struggle Committee, the attack was carried out by the family of the late loan shark Laxmi Kurmi Raut against victim Indal Sahani, a resident of Basabariya Rural Municipality-2.
Sahani had originally taken Rs 800,000 loan from Raut, surrendering 8,805 square meters of land under a conditional ownership transfer as collateral, with a verbal agreement that the land would be returned upon repayment.
Despite Sahani already paying back Rs 1 million across multiple installments and reaching a return agreement at the local ward office, Raut’s family began harassing him after Raut’s death.
The situation escalated when Raut’s son, Bilas, resold Sahani’s land to a third party, ignoring Sahani’s repeated requests to return the property after full settlement of the debt.
Sahani, who was an active participant in the recent barefoot “Justice March” against loan sharking and had previously joined negotiations with Home Minister Sudhan Gurung in Nijgadh, was targeted alongside his family.
Ghimire stated that Bilas, his sons (Bishesar, Laxman, Jagadish, and Ramprabesh Shah), and his wife launched the physical attack.
The assault left Sahani, his sons Umesh and Muna, and his wife Bhagawati Kumari injured. They are currently receiving medical treatment at Barahathwa Hospital.
Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police Bed Prasad Gautam, spokesperson for the Sarlahi District Police Office, stated that the police have not yet received formal notification regarding the incident.
