KATHMANDU: The Karnali Provincial Assembly will discuss the no-confidence motion registered against Chief Minister Yam Lal Kandel on Saturday (July 25).

The Provincial Assembly session was originally scheduled for Thursday at 3:00 PM. However, following a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, Speaker Nanda Gurung issued a notice postponing the sitting and summoning the next meeting for Saturday at 3:00 PM.

The Business Advisory Committee has not yet formally decided to present the motion to the assembly floor.

According to Rajendra Paudel, Information Officer at the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, Speaker Gurung cited special reasons for being unable to hold Thursday’s sitting before announcing the rescheduled date.

On July 16, four ministers from the Nepali Congress resigned from the provincial government. The following day, the Nepali Congress and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) registered a joint no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Kandel, signed by 11 NCP and five Congress lawmakers.

Both parties have officially decided to vote in favor of the motion, with the Congress making its decision on Wednesday and the NCP on Thursday.

In the 40-member Karnali Provincial Assembly, a majority of 21 seats is required to form a government.

A coalition between any two of the three major parties—Congress, NCP, or UML—is sufficient to reach the required majority.

The assembly currently comprises 14 members from the Nepali Congress, 14 from the NCP, 10 from the CPN (UML), one from the RPP, and one independent.
