KATHMANDU: The Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) staged a demonstration in Kathmandu on Monday, demanding the immediate reopening of the Kathmandu Valley Public Library and calling for greater protection of public libraries.

The protest, organized under the NSU Save Public Libraries Campaign, was held outside the library in Bhrikutimandap, which has remained closed for the past three months after being locked over unpaid rent.

Carrying placards with slogans calling for increased investment in knowledge and the preservation of public libraries, participants also staged a symbolic protest by sitting on the street and reading books.

The Social Welfare Council locked the library on April 13 over outstanding rent dues.
