KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched a thorough investigation into the recent clash in Dewanganj, Sunsari district, which resulted in one death and left nine others injured.

According to a press statement issued on Monday by NHRC Spokesperson Tikaram Pokharel, the dispute initially erupted between two local communities over placing a flag on a pole and escalated during DJ music playback. As the situation turned violent with vandalism and physical clashes, police opened fire to regain control.

One local resident, Omprakash Mehta, died from gunshot wounds. Nine individuals were injured in the clash and subsequent police intervention, with two reported to be in critical condition.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at Neuro Hospital, Birat Nursing Home, and Nobel Medical College.

Following the incident, local tension escalated as protesters demonstrated with sticks and iron rods, burning tires at major intersections.

In response to the worsening security situation, the Nepali Army has been deployed in Kaptanganj and surrounding areas to restore order.

The human rights watchdog’s Koshi Province office in Biratnagar has initiated a preliminary monitoring process, coordinating with Sunsari’s Chief District Officer, police officials, hospital administrators, and local residents.

The Commission has urged the Government of Nepal to strengthen security, conduct an impartial probe to prosecute the guilty, grant compensation to the deceased’s family, and provide free medical treatment to the injured.

Furthermore, the NHRC has called upon political parties, civil society leaders, human rights activists, and the general public to resolve disputes peacefully through dialogue and maintain social harmony.
