KATHMANDU: Electric vehicle imports through the Birgunj customs point surged by 143.6 percent in value during the first 10 months (July 17, 2025, to May 14, 2026) of the current fiscal year 2025/26, reaching more than Rs 4.02 billion, according to customs data.

According to the Birgunj Customs Office, 15,271 units of various electric vehicles were imported between July 17, 2025, and May 14, 2026. During the same period last fiscal year, 9,042 units worth Rs 1.65 billion were imported.

The sharp increase was driven largely by imports of electric cars, jeeps, and vans. A total of 657 electric vehicles with capacities ranging from 51 kW to 100 kW, worth Rs 1.87 billion, entered through Birgunj, generating Rs 1.19 billion in revenue. In the corresponding period last year, only six such vehicles worth Rs 20.6 million were imported.

Imports of electric motorcycles and scooters also rose significantly, with 8,867 units worth Rs 1.17 billion imported, generating Rs 385.5 million in revenue.

Overall, fuel-powered and electric vehicles, along with spare parts worth Rs 31.31 billion, were imported through Birgunj during the review period, a 44.58 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. Imports of vehicle parts and unassembled motorcycles also recorded substantial growth, contributing significantly to customs revenue collections.
