JHAPA: The Mechi Customs Office in Kakarbhitta, eastern Nepal’s primary trade hub, collected Rs 17.67 billion in revenue during the fiscal year 2025/26.

This reflects an increase of Rs 1.74 billion—or approximately 11 percent—compared to the revenue generated in the preceding fiscal year 2024/25, which stood at Rs 15.93 billion.

Despite the noticeable growth, the customs facility narrowly missed its annual collection target.

The Department of Customs had set a target of Rs 18.87 billion for FY 2025/26, with the office ultimately achieving roughly 93 percent of its assigned goal.

The Mechi Customs Office serves as a critical transit point for eastern Nepal’s international trade.

Major agricultural exports passing through this border point include orthodox tea, large cardamom, ginger, broom grass and dried cheese.
