KATHMANDU: Continuous heavy rainfall caused the Bagmati River to overflow, completely submerging the Radha Soami Landless Settlers’ Holding Center in Sundarighat, Kirtipur.
While a joint team of 60 Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel eventually evacuated 54 of the 154 residents to the Tribhuvan University campus, victims slammed the government for negligence after being left stranded in the rising waters overnight.
This flooding highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the roughly 1,488 people from 388 households currently living across seven institutional holding centers in the Kathmandu Valley.
These families were displaced during the government’s April 2026 eviction drive, which demolished informal riverbank settlements in Thapathali, Gairigaun, and Manohara.
Despite a subsequent Supreme Court interim order explicitly directing the government to guarantee housing, education, and health services for the displaced, residents continue to languish in temporary camps.
Evacuees face severe hardships, citing inadequate food, regular floodplain inundation, and an unworkable Rs 15,000 monthly rental allowance that fails to match the capital’s actual housing costs.
