NAWALPARASI: A total of 180 inmates remain at large after escaping from Nawalparasi Jail amid unrest during the Gen Z protests, authorities said.
According to Kiran Aryal, a non-gazetted first-class officer at the jail administration, 546 prisoners fled the facility on September 10, 2025, following the protests held on September 8 and 9. Of them, 362 inmates have since returned to the prison, while four others are currently held in different correctional facilities.
Authorities said some inmates surrendered voluntarily, while others were rearrested by police. However, 150 men and 30 women have yet to report back to the prison and remain at large.
Before the escape, the jail housed 575 inmates, including 41 foreign nationals from India. Police have so far apprehended three of the foreign inmates, while 38 remain unaccounted for.
According to Bira Datta Panta, Deputy Superintendent of Police and information officer at the District Police Office Nawalparasi, search operations to locate the escaped prisoners are ongoing.
