KATHMANDU: A woman serving a life sentence has escaped from Sundhara prison in Kathmandu during the night.
The escapee has been identified as 25-year-old Sapana Tamang of Bidur Municipality. According to prison chief and administrator Krishna Chapagain, she escaped around 1 a.m. on Friday night.
Officials said she appeared to have climbed over the prison wall after placing some objects on the ground to aid her escape.
Tamang had been serving a life sentence after being convicted of theft and murder charges.
Authorities said she had previously escaped during the “Gen Z movement” protests and was rearrested two months later.
Prison authorities and police have launched an internal investigation into the incident. Security at the prison falls under the jurisdiction of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari.
