Disaster incidents leave 243 people dead during last six months

KATHMANDU: A total of 3,681 disaster incidents have so far occurred across the country since last mid-April.

The incidents have affected a total of 6, 590 households, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) informed. During the reporting period, 243 people lost their lives while 869 sustained injuries in the disaster related incidents. Likewise, 24 people went missing in such incidents.

According to the NDRRMA sources, fire accounted the highest number of incidents during the last six months. As many as 23 people died and other 177 sustained injuries in a total of 1,295 fire incidents. Altogether 1,411 households have been affected in the fire related disaster incidents.

In a total of 263 incidents of flooding, 29 people died, 23 went missing, 14 injured, and 1,861 families affected, official report stated.

Similarly, 463 landslide incidents occurred during the period, leaving 24 people dead and 41 injured. Additionally, 340 incidents related to heavy rainfall occurred during this period. In the incidents, six people lost their lives, 14 people injured, and 811 families affected.

During the period, a total of 290 incidents of lightning were occurred where 38 people died, 212 injured, and 351 households affected.

Likewise, 304 incidents of snake bites were reported, claiming lives of 77 people, and injuring 233.The NDRRMA sources informed that two persons were injured, and 27 families affected during 85 incidents of forest fires.

Similarly, in 284 incidents of storms, eight people died, 44 injured. 541 families affected.In 217 incidents of animal attacks, 20 people lost their lives, 88 persons injured, and 366 families affected.

The NDRRMA said that public awareness campaigns have been put in place besides strengthening early warning systems to prevent loss and damage from disasters.
