KATHMANDU: The Hindu festival of Bada Dashain began today with the observance of Ghatasthapana rituals in households across the country.
Families lit traditional lamps, placed a kalash, and installed Ganesh idols while invoking Goddess Durga as per Vedic rituals.
The celebrations will continue for 15 days, culminating in family gatherings, feasts, tika, and blessings.
Thousands of people left the capital this morning to celebrate Dashain in their home districts, causing heavy traffic at major exit points.
Kalanki, Koteshwar, Balkhu, Balaju, and Jorpati reported traffic congestion as long-distance buses were packed with travelers.
The main bus terminal and other transport hubs in Kathmandu were crowded with passengers rushing to secure seats.
Traffic police reported increased vehicular flow on highways leading out of the Valley as festive travel peaked.
Additional security and traffic police have been deployed to manage the festival rush and ensure road safety.
Officials anticipate continued heavy passenger movement in the coming days as more people leave Kathmandu to reunite with families.
