KATHMANDU: The Nepali Communist Party has expressed strong objections to yesterday’s remarks made by the Prime Minister Balendra Shah in the House of Representatives regarding the Nepal-India border, labeling them “irresponsible” and contrary to historical facts.

In a press statement issued on Monday by party spokesperson Prakash Jwala, the Nepali Communist Party condemned the Prime Minister’s address on May 31, claiming it undermines national sovereignty and geographical integrity.

The party criticized the Prime Minister for allegedly distorting historical facts by implying that Nepal has occupied Indian territory.

The party emphasized a sharp distinction between international land encroachment and the practical cross-holding of land by border residents.

“Encroachment refers to the unauthorized physical occupation, construction, or expansion of borders by one country on another’s sovereign land without mutual consent or legal right,” the statement reads. “To twist the historical facts of India’s unilateral encroachment on Nepal’s Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura, and to claim that Nepal has also occupied Indian land, is a severe betrayal of the nation.”

The Nepali Communist Party clarified that due to the international boundary fixed by the Sugauli Treaty and ancient border pillars, it is common for border-area citizens to own cultivable land or property on both sides.

The party maintained that this constitutes a state of “land cross-holding” rather than “occupation.”

The opposition party argued that the chief executive’s statement from the parliament rostrum violates the spirit of the Constitution.

While reaffirming its stance that existing border disputes must be resolved through diplomatic channels, the Nepali Communist Party stressed that Nepal’s claims stand firmly on the fact that it has never occupied any Indian territory.

This historical basis led to the publication of Nepal’s revised political map including the Limpiyadhura region.

The party also pointed out that India has yet to accept the report submitted by the Eminent Persons Group (EPG), which was formed to resolve bilateral issues.

The party has strongly demanded that the Prime Minister immediately correct his statement, remove the remarks from the parliamentary record, and initiate fact-based diplomatic dialogue with India by forging a national consensus on matters of national interest.
