KATHMANDU: Ain Mahar, the Chief Whip of the CPN (UML) parliamentary party, has stated that totalitarianism has become dominant within the government.
Speaking during a discussion with media persons at the UML parliamentary party office in Singhadurbar today, he remarked that the government is presenting itself as if it is above the constitution, acts, and laws, reflecting a dominance of authoritarianism.
He added that they also have serious questions regarding the role of the Speaker, alongside that of the government. He accused the Prime Minister of attempting to move forward in a disruptive manner under the guise of “breaking continuity,” while completely ignoring all prevalent practices and laws.
Mahar expressed that because the Speaker’s working style appears to lean toward making the parliament a mere shadow of the government, they have raised objections and protested in the House. He clarified that creating disruptions in parliament to block the voice of the people is not something they desire.
He asserted that the opposition is merely fulfilling its responsibility to hold the government accountable, adding that they remain sensitive to the fact that prolonged disruptions in the House do not benefit the country.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the amendments made by the Finance Minister to the Economic Bill, which has already been registered in parliament, have given rise to suspicions of foul play.
