KATHMANDU: Minister for Education Sasmit Pokharel has stated that politicization in universities will be completely eliminated.

Addressing the 67th anniversary ceremony of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu on Thursday, Minister Pokharel, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the university, announced that political power-sharing in universities will be brought to an end within the next 4 years.

Stating that he will not allow any political or partisan pressure regarding transfers, promotions, or appointments, he urged everyone to immediately inform the Ministry of Education if such pressure occurs.

He noted that appointing Vice-Chancellors through open competition for the first time in history has added new energy and commitment to higher education.

Minister Pokharel emphasized that reforming the university is not possible solely through office bearers; hence, all professors, staff, and stakeholders must take leadership and responsibility from their respective positions.

He also informed that discussions are underway with ambassadors from various countries to bring foreign professors to Nepal and to provide study and teaching opportunities for Nepali professors and students at universities abroad.

Furthermore, he expressed that the government holds the policy of granting greater autonomy to universities and academic freedom to professors.

At the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, stated that special attention will be given to the effective use of information and communication technology as well as the restructuring of academic programs.

He expressed his commitment to moving forward with strategic priorities such as promoting research and innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding research funds, and strengthening international partnerships.

Vice-Chancellor Thapa added that the university will remain continuously active in producing skilled, creative, ethical, and competitive human resources in alignment with national needs and the demands of the global labor market.
