KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the suspicious death of a detainee in the custody of Khurkot Area Police Office in Sindhuli.
According to the secretariat of Inspector General of Police (IGP), the investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dinesh Kumar Acharya to uncover the facts surrounding the death of 23-year-old Shri Krishna BK of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-3 of Sindhuli inside police custody.
BK had been in judicial custody at Khurkot Area Police Office after Sindhuli District Court extended his remand by seven days for investigation in a rape case.
According to police, at 7:45 pm on 21 January 2026, he attempted suicide in the toilet of the detention cell by fashioning a noose from his own black shirt. Police claim he died during treatment.
The DIG Acharya-led investigation committee includes Superintendent of Police (SP) Rabindra Nath Paudel, Inspector Indrajit Sunar, Inspector Prem Regmi, and Sub-Inspector Rajeshwar Sapkota.
According to a letter signed by IGP Dan Bahadur Karki, the five-member committee has been directed to conduct a factual and objective investigation and submit a report within seven days.
Police have taken the death of a detainee in what is considered a secure place like custody seriously and have begun an internal investigation. Based on this committee’s report, it appears the question of whether there was police negligence in the incident will be clarified.
Demanding that the full truth of the incident be disclosed and that those responsible be held accountable, six Rastriya Swatantra Party MPs have been staging a sit-in protest at the gate of the District Administration Office, Sindhuli.
