COLOMBO: India and Sri Lanka have successfully advanced discussions on the proposed High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power grid interconnection project.

In a virtual meeting, delegations reviewed the implementation modalities for the critical cross-border link.

The Indian side was led by Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, while the Sri Lankan delegation was headed by Prof. K.T.M. Udayanga Hemapala, Secretary of the Ministry of Energy.

This discussion follows the technical parameters for the project being confirmed during a meeting in New Delhi on June 16, 2025.

The 1,000 MW interconnection project is crucial for Sri Lanka’s energy security, allowing it to import power during shortages and export surplus renewable energy (particularly wind power), thereby earning foreign exchange.

The link will also enhance grid stability and integrate the nation into the broader regional power market.

Both countries committed to continued engagement to finalize the financial, legal, and operational frameworks necessary for implementation.
