KATHMANDU: Steven Smith has retired from ODI cricket after Australia’s semi-final defeat in the ICC Champions Trophy. Smith will continue to play Test and T20 cricket.
The 35-year-old Smith had informed his teammates that he would not play ODI cricket after the defeat to India. Smith also captained the Australian team in the Champions Trophy in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins. With his retirement, Smith will no longer be part of Australia’s squad for the 2027 World Cup.
Smith said- ‘It has been a great journey, and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many wonderful times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups with so many great teammates to share the journey with was a great highlight. Now is a great opportunity for the players to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, so this is the right time to pave the way.’ He added: “Test cricket remains the priority and I’m really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies and then at home against England. I think I still have a lot to contribute at that stage.”
