KATHMANDU: For the first time, a helicopter has been imported into Nepal through the Tatopani border with China.

The helicopter, manufactured by a French company and purchased by Nepal’s Mountain Helicopters Pvt. Ltd., was transported from China’s Tianjin city in a container and landed at the dry port of Tatopani Customs.

Ado Logistic and Transport Company, which has long been transporting goods from China post-earthquake, brought the helicopter to the border using a 40-foot trailer. The rotor blades were disassembled for transport and are now being reassembled during customs inspection.

Mountain Helicopters has reportedly purchased a total of five helicopters from China, all of which will be brought to Kathmandu through the Tatopani route.

Documents such as cost valuation, Civil Aviation Authority permits, and other details are currently under review.

According to customs office, approximately Rs 41.2 million in revenue will be collected. The importer is liable to pay 13% Value Added Tax (VAT) and 1% customs duty. After customs clearance, a technical team will assess the helicopter’s condition, and it will then be flown directly to Kathmandu.

The import of a helicopter through Tatopani is considered a milestone for the border point and the Sindhupalchok region. Until now, the Tatopani checkpoint had primarily seen the import of garments, fruits, vegetables, electronics, and electric vehicles.

This event has confirmed the feasibility of importing high-value, technical equipment through this route. It is believed this will elevate Nepal–China trade relations to a new level.
