KATHMANDU: Doctors protesting recent rulings by the consumer court have officially withdrawn their agitation after reaching an agreement with the government on Tuesday evening.
The protest had erupted after the Consumer Court ordered several hospitals—Om Hospital, Grande City Clinic, and Himal Hospital—to compensate patients in negligence-related complaints.
In response, the doctors launched a protest campaign demanding legal reforms and protection for medical professionals.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli directed three ministries to hold discussions with the protesting doctors.
Based on the resulting agreement, the Nepal Medical Association and affiliated groups decided to halt all protest activities and resume regular services starting today.
The government formed a task force to present a report with recommendations within seven days, addressing the doctors’ concerns.
This includes revising existing legal and policy frameworks, such as amending the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 through a fast-track process.
The talks included Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Damodar Bhandari, Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya, and Minister of Health and Population Pradeep Poudel, along with other government officials.
The agreement marks a temporary resolution to the dispute, with further developments expected after the task force submits its recommendations.
