KATHMANDU: The Russian Embassy in Nepal has confirmed that its official Telegram channel remains operational, even as access may be disrupted due to the Nepal government’s recent move to block the messaging platform.

In a statement posted on its verified Facebook page, the embassy informed its subscribers: “The official Telegram channel of the Embassy continues to operate. However, due to the decision of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to block the platform within the country, access to our account may be subject to disruptions.”

The embassy added that it is working to maintain stable communication and will continue providing updates through alternative channels, including its official website and social media accounts on VK, Facebook, and Instagram.

Citing recent trends in digital platform restrictions, the embassy also referenced Nepal’s history of regulating online platforms: “In light of growing concerns by the Nepali authorities over online security, the Embassy noted that platforms like TikTok had previously been banned in the country, although the ban has since been lifted.”

Telegram, a widely used messaging platform known for its encrypted communications, has come under scrutiny in various countries for concerns related to misinformation and cybersecurity.

In Nepal, however, no official clarification has yet been offered regarding the reasons for the reported restriction.
