KATHMANDU: The Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) has informed the Election Commission about the removal of its chairperson, Ranjita Shrestha Chaudhary, for appointing an acting chairperson against party bylaws.

Chaudhary was implicated in the Pokhara bribery scandal and subsequently appointed Shiva Bastola from Pokhara as acting chairperson, a decision that faced internal opposition within the party.

The party’s disciplinary committee, led by coordinator Ramlal Dagaura, had given Chaudhary 24 hours to provide an explanation.

When she failed to respond within the deadline, NUP officially notified the Election Commission of her removal. The removal letter was registered with the commission on Wednesday.

The party’s ongoing national gathering in Baneshwor is expected to endorse the disciplinary action and discuss assigning new responsibilities.

The assembly includes participation from central committee members as well as federal and provincial lawmakers.
