WASHINGTON DC: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 35 percent tariff on goods from Canada, increasing the previous 25 percent tariff. The new tariff is set to take effect from August 1.
The White House has announced new tariffs on dozens of countries. Earlier in April, Trump had declared increased tariffs on many nations’ goods, causing widespread disruption.
Following the steep tariff announcements, several countries entered into negotiations with the U.S., leading Trump to pull back from some of these tariff measures.
The European Union and the United Kingdom remained among the countries negotiating trade agreements with the U.S.
Leaders from many countries around the world have started sharing updates about talks with the U.S.
Swiss Confederation President Karin Keller-Sutter stated that there have been no agreements or negotiations with the U.S. regarding tariffs.
Although a last-minute phone call took place with Trump, no agreement was reached, she informed via social media.
On April 1, coinciding with Switzerland’s National Day, Trump announced a 31 percent tariff on Swiss goods. Switzerland remains hopeful about reaching an agreement with the U.S. on this issue.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, citing India’s purchase of oil and weapons from Russia.
