GAZA: Hamas has reiterated that it will not lay down arms unless an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital is established, countering Israel’s demand for the group’s disarmament in ceasefire negotiations.

The statement came after Hamas rejected claims attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, suggesting the group had shown willingness to disarm. Hamas called the assertion inaccurate, emphasizing its commitment to “resistance and weapons” until statehood is achieved.

Israel considers Hamas’ disarmament a non-negotiable condition for any ceasefire deal to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Indirect negotiations between the two sides stalled last week, halting talks aimed at a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

In recent days, Arab governments have pressed Hamas to surrender its weapons and relinquish control of Gaza. This follows announcements by countries like France and Canada declaring plans to recognize a Palestinian state. The UK also stated it would follow suit if Israel fails to meet specific conditions by September.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief Lt Gen Eyal Zamir warned on Friday that military operations in Gaza would persist if negotiations for the release of hostages held by Hamas do not yield results soon.

On Saturday, the family of Israeli hostage Evyatar David condemned Hamas for allegedly starving him, following the release of a video showing him emaciated in a dark tunnel. The family appealed to the Israeli government and the United States to intensify efforts for his rescue, accusing Hamas of using starvation as a propaganda tool.
