YEMEN: At least 68 African migrants have died after a boat capsized off the coast of Yemen.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 74 individuals remain missing.

The ill-fated boat was carrying 151 Ethiopian migrants. Twelve people managed to survive the incident. The bodies of 54 victims were recovered from Khanfar, while 14 more were found at various other locations.

Yemeni authorities had earlier confirmed the death toll of 54. Abdul Bader Kalami, Health Director in Zanzibar, stated that the deceased would be buried in Sakra.

Traveling via sea routes between Yemen and Africa is common. Since the outbreak of Yemen’s civil war in 2014, the number of people using these dangerous sea routes to flee has significantly increased.

Migrants from Somalia and Ethiopia frequently attempt to escape using the same path.
