KATHMANDU:The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned of rising flood risks across Nepal as monsoon winds remain active nationwide.

The monsoon’s low-pressure line currently lies over Nepal’s Tarai, causing widespread cloud cover and light to moderate rainfall in Lumbini, Madhesh, Gandaki, Karnali, Sudurpashchim Provinces, and isolated areas of Koshi and Bagmati Provinces.

As of this morning, water levels in the Karnali and Mahakali rivers are near alert thresholds. Meanwhile, the Koshi, Narayani, Kamala, Bagmati, Eastern Rapti, Western Rapti, Babai, and Kankai rivers are below warning levels but expected to rise.

The Flood Forecasting Division has placed Kavrepalanchok, Makwanpur, Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and surrounding districts on Red Alert for a high risk of sudden floods in smaller rivers.

Additionally, Sankhuwasabha, Ramechhap, Solukhumbu, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu, Myagdi, Jajarkot, Rukum-West, Dailekh, Kalikot, Surkhet, Achham, Bajhang, Dadeldhura, Doti, Baitadi, Darchula, and other districts face a moderate to high flood risk.

A moderate flood risk also exists for Ilam, Jhapa, Taplejung, Panchthar, Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Syangja, Tanahun, Parbat, Gulmi, Jumla, Mugu, Humla, Bajura, and nearby districts.

The public is advised to remain alert, especially in flood-prone riverbanks and low-lying areas.
