KATHMANDU: The government has directed all social media platforms to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology within seven days.

The decision was announced by government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and IT, Prithvi Subba Gurung, while publicizing the decisions of the Cabinet meeting held on August 25.

According to the Cabinet decision, in line with the Supreme Court order, social media platforms must complete registration within the stipulated time. Platforms failing to comply will be instructed by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to be deactivated within the country.

“The directive, issued under the Social Media Management Guidelines and the Supreme Court order, requires all social media operators to be accountable and responsible. Platforms have seven days to register publicly with the Ministry of Communications and IT. Those failing to register or communicate with authorities will be deactivated in Nepal, while registered platforms will be reactivated immediately through the Ministry and Nepal Telecommunications Authority,” Minister Gurung explained.

The Cabinet also released nine other decisions taken during the meeting.

Minister Gurung briefed the media in a regular press conference on all ten decisions made on August 25.
