KATHMANDU: Widespread violence erupted across Nepal as Gen-Z protesters set fire to multiple political party offices and residences of top leaders following the killing of 19 demonstrators by police yesterday.
Protesters torched the offices of the ruling CPN-UML and Nepali Congress, as well as government buildings, municipal offices, and district party offices nationwide.
Residences of prominent figures were also targeted, including President Ram Chandra Paudel, outgoing Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Balkot, Maoist Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) in Khumaltar, and Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung.
The protests, which began yesterday, are driven by widespread frustration among young Nepalis against corruption, entrenched privilege, generational wealth inequality, and the government’s recent social media restrictions.
Observers warn that the situation is rapidly spiraling out of control, raising serious concerns about public safety and political stability.
Security forces have struggled to contain the unrest as demonstrators continue to mobilize across major cities. Political leaders are calling for calm, but tensions remain high as the country faces an unprecedented wave of youth-led civil disobedience.
