KATHMANDU: Of the 28 Bhatbhateni Supermarket stores across Nepal, only seven have remained untouched, while the rest have suffered damage during Tuesday’s Gen-Z protests in Kathmandu and other cities.
Bhatbhateni, which has provided employment to thousands of young people from part-time to full-time jobs, now faces a major challenge in managing staff from outlets that have been destroyed beyond operation.
12 stores were completely set on fire and destroyed, including those in Naxal, Maharajgunj, Boudha, Koteshwor, Baluwatar, Pokhara, Chitwan, Hetauda, Birtamod, Damak, Biratnagar, and Dharan.Looting and arson left these outlets entirely gutted.
Other branches in Kalanki, Thimi, Balaju, Janakpur, Butwal, Birgunj, Dhangadhi, Itahari, and Bhairahawa were vandalized and looted, with most goods stolen.
The remaining seven outlets—Tokha, Satdobato, Anamnagar, Sanagaun, Tripureshwor, Patan, and Nepalgunj—escaped damage.
Bhatbhateni said it will take at least two to three weeks to finalize the full assessment of losses.
