KATHMANDU: Nepali Communist Party (NCP) leader and former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has announced his resignation from active party responsibilities, citing health-related complications.

Issuing a statement on social media on Thursday, Mahara said he has been active in the communist movement for decades, contributing through various phases including the CPN Mashal, CPN Ekata Kendra, CPN (Maoist center), and the current NCP, while dedicating much of his life to the party and national politics.

He said he has been suffering from an atrophy-related illness for several years and, despite regular treatment, has not seen expected improvement, making it difficult to continue active responsibilities effectively.

Mahara stated that he will remain a general member of the party from Thursday, clarifying that his decision is based solely on health conditions and not ideological or political differences.

He expressed confidence in the new generation to lead the country toward prosperity and extended gratitude to leaders, cadres, and supporters throughout his political journey.
