KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has once again spoken publicly about the events following the Gen Z movement, declaring that he is ready to step down from his position for the sake of party reform.
Presenting a detailed proposal on the country’s current situation and future responsibilities, Thapa said that he is willing to resign from the General Secretary post if it helps in rebuilding the party.
He remarked that the political scenario following the protests of September 8 and 9 has pushed the nation into a challenging state.
Terming the unconstitutional process and the vacancy in the House of Representatives as both politically and constitutionally serious, Thapa stressed that the Congress must act responsibly to ensure timely elections.
Thapa emphasized unity against all attempts to divide the party and the nation.
Referring to the sacrifice of innocent youths in the protests, he said their aspirations for clean, transparent, and people-oriented governance must not go in vain.
Calling party restructuring an urgent necessity, Thapa proposed launching a reconstruction campaign beginning on Constitution Day with full commitment.
He asserted that even if he gives up his official position, he will remain dedicated to party building.
“The Gen-Z movement raised the demand for a corruption-free state and society. To lead such an agenda, our party must undergo a complete transformation—membership, organizational structure, leadership selection, agendas, and working style all require fundamental reform,” Thapa said.
“The way we are functioning now cannot rebuild the party. For comprehensive reform, we must be ready to give up our posts and take new risks. For this, I am gladly prepared to resign from the position of General Secretary,” he said.
He also condemned the attacks on party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and Nepali Congress cadres across the country, urging all levels of the party to provide support to those affected by the protests.
