KATHMANDU: Former prime minister and CPN-UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli said Thursday that he has become the subject of a deliberate campaign of attacks, accusing his critics of trying to punish him for refusing to engage in corruption.

Speaking at a discussion with central officials of Press Chautari Nepal, Oli asked, “What crime have I committed? Is not being corrupt a crime? I have not done it, and I will not do it.”

He expressed concern that recent “provocative, unprincipled and vengeful activities” have posed a serious threat to social peace and harmony. Efforts to bring violent and separatist forces into the mainstream of peaceful politics, he argued, have been twisted into accusations against him. “To integrate such groups into the path of national unity — is that a crime?” he asked.

Oli criticized what he described as rising anarchy and hate speech on social media. “If someone holds a different opinion, must their house be burned down? Must they be hacked and crushed to death? Is this our civilization, our values?” he said.

He also rejected claims that recent protests carried out in the name of Generation Z reflected the true voice of young Nepalis, calling them baseless and vengeful. He accused not only social media but also some mainstream outlets of spreading damaging rumors.

Urging journalists to stand firm, Oli said, “Press freedom was won through struggle; no one can take it away. Stand on the side of truth and do not be afraid to speak it.”

He clarified that his government was not seeking to shut down social media but only to ensure platforms operate within the law and with respect for national dignity. Oli called for unity to end unrest and fear, and to guarantee the rule of law.
