KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has begun consultations with major political parties regarding the reinstatement of the House of Representatives.
The meeting, which he had scheduled for 9 AM on Wednesday, started after a brief delay.
Leaders from the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and CPN (Unified Socialist), among others, participated in the meeting.
Speaker Ghimire had invited leaders from ten major parties to discuss the issue.
Rastriya Swatantra Party has skipped the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has received ten writ petitions challenging the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the formation of an interim government.
Following the court petitions seeking the reinstatement of Parliament, Speaker Ghimire has stepped up his efforts.
The meeting was reportedly called to devise a way forward on the matter.
During the meeting, Speaker Ghimire is expected to seek the parties’ opinions on the reinstatement of Parliament.
After consultations with the political parties on Wednesday, he is scheduled to meet with legal experts on Thursday for further advice.
On September 12, President Ram Chandra Paudel had appointed Sushila Karki as Prime Minister, even though she was not a sitting member of Parliament.
Shortly after assuming office, Prime Minister Karki had recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives.
Legal experts have since filed ten writ petitions at the Supreme Court, arguing that both Karki’s appointment and the dissolution of Parliament were unconstitutional.
