KATHMANDU: The Electricity Regulatory Commission, the regulatory body of energy sector, is to receive a membership of the South Asia Forum for Infrastructure Regulation (SAFIR), also known as South Asian Infrastructure Regulatory Forum.

The government has granted permission to the Commission to obtain the membership. The cabinet meeting held on November 24 had given permission to the Commission for the membership of the organisation.

The Commission had been actively involving in a process to obtain membership of the Forum for the past few years.
The membership of the SAFIR would be significant achievement in view of sharing experience with regional and international regulatory bodies, adoption of best practices and development of regulatory skill and capacity.

Information related to various regulatory practices required for improvement of electricity sector would be received once the Commission gets SAFIR membership.

Similarly, it would be easier to share knowledge and experience between regulatory institutions and bodies of different countries as well as to encourage energy-related research.

It is also believed that capacity building among regulatory institutions, exchange of best practices and knowledge as well as transfer of technical knowhow would enhance human resources capacity of the nation.
