121 incidents of press freedom violations in a year

KATHMANDU: A total of 121 incidents of press freedom violations have been recorded in Nepal in 2025.

The incidents related to press freedom violations are based on applications registered with the Press Council Nepal and its regular monitoring, says a press statement issued by PCN here today.

Among the incidents, the highest is incident of threats and abuse at 50 while 37 were related to assault, 15 related to professional insecurity, nine relation to obstruction, five of arrest attempts, two of suspicious deaths, two of policy restrictions and one incident of gender-based violence.

By province, the highest number of incidents was founded to have taken place in Bagmati Province with 62, followed by 27 in Madhes Province, eight in Sudur Paschim, seven in Koshi, 6 each in Lumbini and Gandaki and five in Karnali.

The council has stated that 200 journalists/media outlets were obstructed from exercising their press freedom in the year.

The monitoring and documentation was carried out from January 1 to December 31, 2025, adds the statement.
